MBA in Real Estate
Benefits
Through a variety of instructional methods, including case study, students learn to solve problems, make decisions, communicate effectively, work in teams, and exercise leadership. In short, they acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to lead complex organizations and are well prepared for the responsibilities and rigors of management. The program is often recommended for individuals who do not have an undergraduate business degree and are seeking a thorough understanding of the functional interrelationships in successful business organizations.
An MBA with a Real Estate and Land Development concentration benefits students at various points in their career. Individuals who have recently received their baccalaureate may choose to refine their business skills while their undergraduate training is fresh. Individuals with work experience often find that an MBA is the key to rapid promotion or a career change. Finally, an MBA from VCU meets the needs of students who recognize that the best preparation for an uncertain future is continuous learning.
Curriculum
The curriculum is flexible and is designed for students with diverse undergraduate backgrounds. The program consists of eight foundation courses, eight required advanced courses, and four electives for an MBA with a concentration.
Prerequisites
A course in calculus is a prerequisite for the MBA. This prerequisite may be waived for students who present satisfactory equivalent preparation. Students are expected to enter the program with basic computing proficiency. Specific expectations will be provided by the Graduate Studies in Business Office. A concentration in Real Estate and Land Development requires FIRE 431 - Advanced Real Estate Appraisal. Prerequisites do not have to be completed before applying.
Foundation Courses
Each student must complete seven foundation courses. The courses may be waived for students who have taken the equivalent material at the undergraduate level in the past five years with a grade of "B" or better. If foundation courses are not waived at the time of admission, the student must take the graduate-level version of the course.
Elective Courses
Each student will complete three electives at the 600-level. A student's choice of electives must include one or more courses that are designated to have substantial global, entrepreneurial and/or experiential components. Students can establish a concentration by taking all electives in a single area. The Graduate Studies in Business office maintains current lists of approved electives for each concentration and for the general program.
